Five finger exercise Vicar Nick Parker meets predecessor Sir
John Fenton, the first post-Reformation vicar - and tries to put his
finger on a puzzle which has foxed theologians for nearly 450 years. Sir John died in 1566 and took to the grave with him the reason for - well, you try to find it. Spotted
it yet? It's not the Geneva gown, nor yet the
Bible, inscribed Verbum Dei (the Word
of God). It's
the extra finger on the right hand. Was
it added to highlight the Bible at a
time of huge religious turmoil? Did the engraver make a
mistake? Or did Sir John really have an extra digit? Whatever the
truth, it makes an unusual brass rubbing. Or
a frustrating puzzle, Click on the bottom picture if you have half
an hour to spare... |
