The 15 miles long road between Jerusalem and Jericho is the setting for the Parable of the Good Samaritan, illustrated in the window in the lady chapel dedicated to the Barker family of surgeons. George led the drive to have the memorial built in the north churchyard. He and his wife each gave £50 to the project. A meeting of subscribers and the organising committee on 24 January 1920 approved plans for the memorial, to be built in red Hollington stone, 23ft 6in high with figures of a soldier and sailor. The church hosted a group of ringing friends from all over the country who meet up for a week of tower grabbing each year. What they rang - a 50 minute quarter peal of Xartica Surprise Royal - looked like this: what it sounded like, in the words of a dog walker passing by, was “lovely”. The ringers’ verdict: “We very much enjoyed ringing your bells. Thankyou very much.“ The visit was recorded for posterity in the visitors’ book and on The Ringing World’s BellBoard. The method is new to Coleshill ringers. Tuesday night practises centre on less arduous work. And for fun, Coleshill ringers can ring like this. The muffles were placed either side of the clapper ball to reduce the strike note to a hum.On the Tuesday practise night before Remembrance Sunday the ringers will tie them to one side of the bells to enable them to ring half muffled in memory of those who died in wars and conflicts over the last 120 years. Before ringing on a weekly Sunday, a prayer is said appropriate to the changing festivals. On Remembrance Sunday ringers will pray: “May we ring these bells to honour those who have died in the service of their country and comfort those who mourn them. Through Jesus Christ, Amen.” As the last of the congregation moves into church, the bells begin their annual salute to the dead by ringing in descending rounds. Each bell in turn rings up and rests, eventually leaving the heaviest bell to toll alone for a short while.Later, the muffles will be cut off and the memories and mourning put back in a cupboard for another year - coincidentally in an old Royal British Legion poppy box. A simple cross records the loss of Captain Eric Back, RN, of HMS Natal, his wife and nearly 400 crew and civilians by an internal explosion. He was a son of the Maxstoke vicar, the Rev Samuel Back.
